Mayor Chastain: $45,345/year… FOR WHAT!?

An article in today’s Bedford Times-Mail entitled “Pay increases ranged from 2 to 7 percent” details how much of a raise the city employees have received over the last several years.

The most notable thing, in my opinion, is that Mayor Chastain‘s salary was up nearly 21% from 2000-2006. Now, don’t get me wrong — I fully believe in rewarding hard-working employees who produce results. The thing is, I just don’t see that Mayor Chastain is actually producing any results.

Equally scary is that Mark Kern, the Clerk-Treasurer, makes the same as the Mayor does. That, in and of itself, isn’t so bad. What’s bad is that they continue to give him raises when he screws up, bad.

I sure wish I could go to work day after day, produce no results, and still get raises of up to 6.9%. The largest raise I’ve received wasn’t that much, and that was only after my computer forensics work (you’re not the only one certified in that field, Chief Hardman) saved my company a bit over $100k.

That’s to say nothing of the City Council members, who receive over $400/mo. (prior to their newfound raise) for spending 20 minutes in a once-a-month meeting.

Damn, I’m in the wrong field. I should run for office…
