Mayor Chastain: $45,345/year… FOR WHAT!?

An article in today’s Bedford Times-Mail entitled “Pay increases ranged from 2 to 7 percent” details how much of a raise the city employees have received over the last several years.

The most notable thing, in my opinion, is that Mayor Chastain‘s salary was up nearly 21% from 2000-2006. Now, don’t get me wrong — I fully believe in rewarding hard-working employees who produce results. The thing is, I just don’t see that Mayor Chastain is actually producing any results.

Equally scary is that Mark Kern, the Clerk-Treasurer, makes the same as the Mayor does. That, in and of itself, isn’t so bad. What’s bad is that they continue to give him raises when he screws up, bad.

I sure wish I could go to work day after day, produce no results, and still get raises of up to 6.9%. The largest raise I’ve received wasn’t that much, and that was only after my computer forensics work (you’re not the only one certified in that field, Chief Hardman) saved my company a bit over $100k.

That’s to say nothing of the City Council members, who receive over $400/mo. (prior to their newfound raise) for spending 20 minutes in a once-a-month meeting.

Damn, I’m in the wrong field. I should run for office…

You're exactly right. If anyone has noticed, Ken Allen, Bill Arnold and Joey Slone will say yes to anything (frankly I bet Butch could ask Kenny to stick a frog up his butt and he would agree). Dwight and Everett are the only ones who ask questions or attempt to foster discussion with Everett doing it much more than Dwight. Butch has got it down pat; he asks for a motion, Kenny makes it, and the other two stooges agree. And, voila, it's passed! Voters, however, appeared to figure out this process in the spring when they voted Rosemary to replace Kenny. Even IF Butch gets re-elected, he'll have to find a new "yes man" because I know Rosemary won't do it! Discussion is essential to council meetings. And it's the job of our council members to have that discussion for all of us. We shouldn't have to be there, representing ourselves, they should do that for us. I also believe that the two "yes" stooges left on the council better start fostering discussion in these meetings soon or else they'll be outed just like Kenny was. Yours, RetroRider77

From someone I know, trust, and believe: I was at the dollar store Sat. also when the Mitchell cop had the guy out in the parking lot. The guy was mad but he was no threat to that cop.The cop finally handcuffed him and put him in the front seat of the cop car. It looked like he cuffed him to the rear view mirror because his hands never moved from the top of the window. I watched for probably 10-15 min. before I went into the dollar store. I was in there probably 15 min. When I came out the man was back outside the car talking to 3 cops. There was the Mitchell cop car a county cop car and a white car I don't know if it was another Mitchell car or state.Wish I had looked now. Mon. paper Lawrence County Police for Sept.15 8PM William Ozias, 45 Mitchell, Public Intoxication I knew him years ago and that is who was in the parking lot. Just more proof Mitchell cops can't do anything right now.Or at least it was for me.I have no reason to lie to you. -- Webmaster, Mitchell News

State police arrests aren't reported to the paper. Don't know why, but if you're ticketed by the ISP, then it doesn't go in. I think they only get the logs from Mitchell, LC and Bedford. Yours, RetroRider77

Thank you. I too realize Jeremy hates it when we pick on misspellings, but come on, we have to at least be able to read the postings. Yours, RetroRider77

So OK I am a Democrat, I guess. I mean I wouldn't vote any other way except Democrat in a presidential election (especially these days), but I tend to vote both ways locally. But I am a tad bit tired of the Democratic politics in Mitchell. It's downright dirty. I hear the Democrats are planning to run Mark Kern in the election, even though he resigned. Then, if he beats George James, then they are going to appoint Kim Leonard (kerns deputy) to that position, thinking that Mark (even tho he resigned) has a better chance of winning the seat than Kim would. First, that's a slap to Kim. Second, I certainly hope the voters of Mitchell don't fall for it. Mark Kern's name will be on the ballot in November even though he doesn't plan on occupying the seat. Don't vote for him! Not because of Kim cause she is probably able to do the job; i don't know i don't know her, but because of the dirty tactics. I got an idea! Maybe Butch and Hardman can rehire Michael Brewer and he can climb to the top of a building (cause he was the only one skinny and in shape enough to do it) and he can hang a bed sheet from the roof of the downtown restaurant! That would be the only thing dirtier than what they're doing now. Yours, RetroRider77

I dont get the paper very often, but today I picked it up and was flipping thru it when I came to the Vote for Butch..continue the progress campaign ad. Progress? Continue the progress? What progress? Perhaps the progress of the town slowly dying? Perhaps the progess of the wonderful, productive work the Street Department is continuing to do? Perhaps the progress the local law enforcement has made on stopping crime inside our little town? Perhaps the progress of constant pay raises for city employees, elected and the other for doing absolutely nothing?Or perhaps the steady progress of jobs leaving Mitchell and the employees of those jobs leaving along with them? For being a one-liner this ad is one of the most dishonest I have seen anyone run on. And I thought lies were only supposed to be told by us sinners who dont attend church everytime the doors are open.

This town is such a joke, why it is still surviving at all with Butch running the show for 8 years is beyond me. But, it is equally beyond me how the country is still holding up at all after 8 years of Bush running the BIG show. This whole damn town of city employees pretend to work while only a couple actually do. Hell, the only time I see a cop is at school waiting to harrass the occasional parent who parks in the wrong spot to pick up their kids. I would think if they are going to be at the school why not get out of the car and make themselves useful by playing traffic cop for the parents who have to cross the street with their kids so they wouldnt have to dodge the oncoming cars. Must be too much for them to handle, to be kind and help out the people who make sure they get their paychecks every damn week! Officer Fish used to be able to handle this simple task when on the force but the rest of the lazy morons just set in the car and wait to pounce if we do something wrong. If the descent cops were treated fairly by the City of Mitchell they would still be here, but all we are left with are the Barney Fifes. WTF?? This isnt Mayberry!!

I think its quite unfair that Watson is the guy to deliver all of the letters concerning unkept property and harrassing the people to clean it up when his property is one of the worst ones in town. He has an old house on it that is falling down and lots of weeds and trash laying around. I hope the next Mayor sends him lots of nasty letters to clean up his mess and fines the crap out of him.

Really?? I havent heard anything about that. With the way they have been renovating things over there Im expecting your right. Im just hoping what they have to say is going to better the town in some way. We dont have to wait long to hear it, fall elections are almost upon us.

It was told to me that Tyler offered to be the head of both the water and the street departments. He might as well be he does work at both departments. But, Butch shot him down. Imagine that! Wanting to keep a Watson head of anything!

Im sure there are some of you that have bad things to say about Tyler, Im not doubting them at all. But, from my personal experience, we had made several calls in about a few different problems that were supposed to be taken care of. Even though it wasnt Tylers job to do so, he came out everyime and took care of the problems. So, like I said, my comment about Tyler is from dealing with him personally. Your experiences may be different.

You're right. Thanks for correcting that. I knew that, no idea where I pulled that number from now. I've changed the post above to reflect your correction. -- Webmaster, Mitchell News

I am really surprised at how stupid the people involved in running the town of Mitchell really consider us all to be. We all know how dirty a few of the cops are, we know what stunts they pull when they think no one is watching. This town is so small, everyone knows everyone so word travels fast. We are very aware of who works for their money and who doesnt. The trash truck guys work hard, as well as the water department guys. Kudos to Tyler Duncan, he cleans up alot of messes the lazy guys wont touch. We are also aware of who drives around in the city trucks all day pretending to work, and who never hit a lick all day. If you need something done from the street department you will be put on "The List." Apparently, this list has been going on since Butch took over, because its so long, they never get to you. Then the last resort to get anything done is a council meeting. It takes complaining at 3 or 4 meetings before you see any results, if you ever see any at all, its a miracle. I have lived in this town my whole life, and was never really fond of Hancock as Mayor. But, if I could take it back I would. At least the city workers EARNED their money when Hancock was running the show. Also, Hancock didnt see it fit to give himself a raise everytime he felt the urge. Must be why the towns budget numbers were always in the plus side and written in black, when now they are in minus and written in red. Everyone, vote for Dan Terrell. We need someone who cares about the town as a Mayor should, not someone who cares only of himself. We may be a small town, but together we can do BIG things.
