Nicholas Arvin18-year-old Nicholas Arvin, Ellettsville, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase, according to an Owen County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The news release stated that the chase began just after midnight Sunday when Arvin refused to stop for Bloomington police officers and fled on Indiana Highway 46. Officers from Bloomington, Ellettsville, Monroe County, and Indiana University pursued him into Owen County, where other officers joined in the chase.

Arvin ran off the road into a field and his vehicle became stuck.

As Owen County officers approached the vehicle, they heard a gunshot from inside the vehicle and confirmed that Arvin, the driver, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At 1:49 a.m. on July 10th, Arvin posted “wanna kill myself” on his Facebook page:

I can't believe anyone with a heart at all would write such a mean comment. I can't imagine how miserable of a person you would have to be to make light of such a horrible tragedy. Very sad.

Wow..... I honestly am shocked at how sick and cruel people can be these days. Nick was loved so much by so many people. May he not be judged by his last act on earth but his beautiful smile, funny as hell laugh, and good deeds be cherished memories. We all love you and miss you so much Nick. RIP. To the newspaper this is the worst article I have read about Nick and the things that happened that night. I agree with Tesa. Police are at fault here....I think its time to hire a new writer. Someone that will take into the consideration of others feelings..... To Bob Johnson: FUCK YOU YOU FUCKIN ASS!!!!!! DICK! UGH!

The kind of commentary perpetrated by people like Bob just goes to show how terrible the world is becoming. It is horrifying to think that an 18 year old could ever make such a tragic decision. I mean seriously, the interior of those cabs is FUCKIN BEAUTIFUL. I feel bad for the mortician and whoever has to detail that truck. :(

The face book status and the police chase were a week apart, maybe if the police wouldn't have got all high and mighty with involving so many police cars, things could have went different. Either way, this article in misleading. Sometimes its better to have left things alone then put things like this in a paper. Someone had to of dug through his face book to find this.

Seriously, have some damned respect for Nick and those who loved him. We wouldn't do that to someone who you loved and missed so respect Nick and those of us who still love him. I think many of us would prefer if you removed this all together. You most likely do not have consent to post those names and private information.

This is to Bob Johnson. I can't believe you would say something so inappropriate and immature. He was loved by so many people and was a great person. Dumb comments like that is a great way to get a lot of people mad at you. Just think if someone you were friends with did that and someone left the comment you did, how would you feel? Think before you type man. And to who posted the article, did you get the consent of the people who commented on Nick's status to post their names online? If not, I suggest you remove it.

I want to say that I'm sorry to hear about his poor boy and how he felt that killing himself was his only way out. I think teenagers these days don't take into consideration how their actions affect more than just themselves. I feel so bad for his family and friends. I see the RIP ARVIN on the trucks/cars around town and it makes me think to myself that I need to remind my teen how much they mean to me and how if I lost them my world would be crushed. Suicide is a selfish act and its sad to hear about this young man who should have been starting his life ended it in a few seconds. I pray for his family. As for the facebook thing, it was a little tacky to put on there his posting BUT his facebook was NOT set to private which makes it up for public display. Wish he would have given a little more time for his family and friends to try to help him before he pulled the trigger. May you finally be at peace Nick.

Brian - you are correct about what is posted on FB is public for the most part. I'll be the first to agree with that. If we were talking about anything but someone losing their life, I would/could go along with posting the exact page, but, to me, as human beings, there has to be a line drawn in the sand of what we will do and how far we will go. I agree it is there, I agree everyone (depending on your privacy settings) can see it. Alot of people are not that technical and if you go to Nick's page and you are not his friend it asks you to click to become his friend. We all know that you can click on his "wall" and find this bit of information as we all did, however, I'm not sure that was his intent or why would he have just opened his page to the "world". Unfortunately I don't think most of us think of what the implications of silly things we write on FB or any other social networking site can do to us or what hurt it can cause when others that go above and beyond to try to find information that was clearly not meant for them. Again, maybe this is too close and personal to me to be objective but I just think Mitchell News could have just stated it was on his FB page and not included the actual picture of the page along with all the people that are still hurting like crazy because of Nick's death and wonder what they could have done to prevent this. I know alot of people are hurting and I'm sure it is hard for you to understand right now why this is hurtful. I agree it is public to a point so in a way you are correct, but, you are certainly nor the Mitchell News was not thinking with their hearts when you made these observations. :( I just want you to think of it that way and understand why the people commented the way they did on this page and why they feel the way they feel. Nobody is asking that the Mitchell News not put that he said "I wanna kill myself" .. we were just asking why the actual picture of the page and all the comments had to be posted. That's all.

OOPS,I made a mistake, Mitchell News, website.. no printing involved. My mistake, Just as it was a mistake to be so tacky as to even put his private information on here. How is it right that this was even posted? Let the family and friends, heal from what has happened. This is painful for his loved ones. This was his private facebook, You should be more respectful. How tacky!!!!

mitcHELL

Do you feel that this will help you sell more papers, or what? His own parents were not even aware of this post that their son had left on facebook. Did the parents give you permission to print this? I would hope so, because I know that he had many friends, co-workers and family members that loved him. Can you perhaps write something in your paper, focusing on the good things about this young man? That would be nice. So many people are suffering, and at this very moment paying their respects. His facebook picture and comments should have been kept private, but I guess facebook is never private. The family is going through enough right now, without seeing this in print.. Please be a little more selective in the future.. Mary.

This is really fucked up! Nick doesn't deserve to have his pictures and private facebook status posted on your news article. You guys need to get your priorities straight. It's fucked up mitchells news group...hope to hear from you soon Danny

Did you really have to post an extract from his facebook page?? I thought small town America had more class.

Lisa Figg

I have been directed to your paper's website today by a friend that was so hurt and upset that you posted the actual Facebook Page that Nick Arvin left on July 10th. I had to see it for myself to believe it, I went to your page to find that your paper DID post the comment that he left on July 10th. I think that just saying he left the comment on FB was enough, you didn't have to post it along with all the comments that was left from his friends and co-workers. Everyone is suffering right now and to have this posted on your paper's website is just really cruel and hurtful. This is so hurtful, all his friends and family are probably already beating themselves up on what they could have done, should have done, and so on, they do not need the reminder in print. I realize you want to sell papers but at any cost to other people's feelings? WOW.

Shame on you all. You could atleast give the family and friends time to heal. and invading Nics privacy by copying and pasting his FB page? Have you no morals? A shame. Just a shame.

This was the most inappropriate article I have ever read. Why must you lower yourselves and find it necessary to post Nick's FB posts. Nicks family and friends have been through enough already and to include his friends responses was total BS. I hope everyone boycotts your newspaper from now on. The Arvin's are a great family who have had to deal with more tragedy than any one person should ever have and you just made there day worse. Why not write a positive article on what a great kid Nick was and also his family. Shame on you!!!!!!!!! You should be praying right now that what you just did won't happen to you one day in the Mitchell News or any other newspaper.

agreed nate this bob johnson is one sick fuckin individual i really wish i knew who he was and for the news paper or website or whatever this was really uncalled for all of nicks family and friends have been thru enough without seein this and get the story straight before you go posting stuff

I understand that all, but these kids today need to realize that the internet should be used as a tool, and to keep their personal information off of it. No one is telling them that anything that you post can be seen by the world. This was clearly a cry for help, or attention, but it pisses me off when all this stuff is thrown out onto the internet, and then people complain when it gets posted for the public to see. My heart goes out to the family. As a parent myself, I can't imagine their pain. Our children need to learn.....If its private, don't post it. The news media has the right to post anything they want. Facebook is a public social network, and everyone has rights to it, even if we don't agree.

Who cares man, its just shitty to do that, public info or not, no need for it. Your absolutely pathetic for arguing with people about this, its wrong plain and simple, have a heart bub, u need prayer.

These kids today use "facebook" maybe to vent how they feel... Yes, Brian I agree with ONE thing that you said, maybe it was a cry for help. The media does in fact have a right to post anything that they want. BUT, that is making them look really bad right now in the publics eyes.. they need to be selective of what the print, OOPS< i didnt mean print, i meant type write, whatever, and you say that you are a parent... HUH??? do you have any teenagers?? Hopefully IF you do and one of your children wants to kill themself, they wont post it, that teen will come to YOU, but what if the media gets wind of it, and says wow, this kid told his dad, and wow, he is gone.... HUH???? try to be a little more open minded please, you have seriously pissed a lot of people off here. Did you in fact know Nick? just wondering... and it probably was a cry for help, but let me tell you ONE thing it was not a cry for ATTENTION, so unless you knew him, why don't you get facts straight. God bless, and i hope that you keep your kids off of facebook, if it is private...

Lisa Figg
Lisa Figg

Thanks Brian. I do hear what you are saying. I will say I agree it is public and I agree kids and adults should be careful what they write. I, myself say a lot of silly things that I post if something ever happened it could get twisted around. This was just so tragic. Anyway...I do feel like in ways we r sying the same thing, just a little different...its down to we feel bad for the family, friends and this young man. May God be with them all and hopefully we have all learned from this if nothing else. Thanks for being so understanding, I do appreciate that. I'm also a parent, I'm a parent of a son same age, I think this is part of why it hurt so much. :(
