Dr. Alva SibbittA hearing held Tuesday regarding whether to cancel Alva Sibbitt’s contract with the Mitchell Community Schools adjourned shortly after 8pm without a decision being made, according to the Bedford Times-Mail.

Sibbitt is the former Superintendent of Paoli Community Schools who was hired by MCS to serve as Superintendent beginning January 1st.

Prior to assuming that role, however, Sibbitt was arrested in Paoli after allegedly ramming his vehicle into an Indiana State Police patrol car. Sibbitt was charged with five counts: resisting law enforcement (felony), intimidation (felony), resisting law enforcement (misdemeanor), criminal recklessness (misdemeanor), and criminal mischief (misdemeanor).

The Times-Mail reports that the school board heard testimony from more than 30 “witnesses” over a period of 10 hours. The majority of these “witnesses”, of course, were not present at the scene of the alleged crime.

The only testimony that the school board should be interested in is that of Indiana State Trooper Robert Lambert, who recounted the details of the December 9th traffic stop that led to Sibbitt’s arrest. In his Supplemental Case Report, Trooper Lambert wrote:

Sibbitt then yelled at me saying “you don’t know who I am. I will have your job. I will have your ass!” Sibbitt then told me that he wanted to go to the Orange County Jail in order to speak with the Sheriff so he could get all of this taken care of.

The school board needs to consider the statement that they will be sending to the students at Mitchell schools if they do not cancel Sibbitt’s contract. It should be fairly obvious that he is not a respectable role model for our students.

Sibbitt, who is currently on paid leave from MCS while drawing a salary of $105,000, did not testify at the hearing. He also has a pending civil case against the school.

The next regularly scheduled session of the Mitchell school board is April 11th.
