On Saturday, March 12, 2011, officers were called to the Big Cedar Trailer Court near Brookville for a report of an unresponsive two-year-old child. Sapphyre Putney was taken to a hospital in Harrison, Ohio, where she was pronounced dead.

A death investigation began and the final autopsy reports, just recently released by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office, indicated the child died of blunt impact injuries to her abdomen resulting in a laceration to her small intestine and a pancreatic injury.

The initial investigation revealed that Luis Antonio Gonzalez, 31, the live-in boyfriend of the victim’s mother, had been babysitting the child during the overnight hours while the mother worked the third shift. When the mother arrived home from work that morning, the child was unresponsive in her bed and the 911 call was placed.

A Franklin Circuit Court warrant for Gonzalez’s arrest was issued Thursday afternoon charging him with Murder and Battery Resulting in Death, a Class A Felony. Gonzalez was arrested without incident around 4:30 p.m. by Harrison, Ohio, police officers in his apartment at 217 Harrison Ave. where he lived with the child’s mother.

Gonzalez is currently being held in the Hamilton County Detention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, pending extradition back to Franklin County.
