A number of new state laws go into effect Friday, July 1st.

Of the more than 230 new laws, probably the most notable (for this area) are the laws banning synthetic marijuana (“Spice”). Mitchell passed an ordinance banning these substances late last year and Bedford followed suit shortly after.

Other laws going into effect permit residents to transport handguns to gun ranges, gun shows, and other homes without a permit. The new laws also prevent cities and counties from further restricting gun use and ownership.

In addition, a statewide ban on texting while driving also goes into effect Friday.

Perhaps someday we’ll be able to buy a cold Pepsi at the liquor store or a beer on Sunday.
