Child DeathFriday afternoon around 3:40 p.m., police officers were called to an Eastern Boulevard hotel. Upon arrival, they asked Betsy Dalton and Jerry Conrad what was wrong several times before Conrad told them that there were “babies in the toilet,” according to Clarksville Police Chief Dwight Ingle.

Officers found two newborns, one male and one female, in the toilet. The female began crying when she was removed from the toilet. Attempts to revive the male newborn were not successful, police said.

Both newborns and Betsy Dalton were taken to Clark Memorial Hospital where the male newborn was pronounced dead. Conrad and Dalton both told police that they did not know that Dalton was pregnant.

According to police, both Dalton and Conrad have a diminished mental capacity. A hotel maintenance man who spoke with WLKY said that the pair had been living at the hotel since January and described them as “severely mentally challenged.”

Conrad came out of the couple’s hotel room Friday and told the maintenance man, “I’m going to be a father” before returning to the room and calling police, he said.
