Deputy Chief Valerie Cunningham, the highest ranking woman in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, issued a personal apology to 13 female officers.

An email to 37 commanders sent last Tuesday had a spreadsheet attached listing the chest and waist sizes for 13 officers whose protective vests needed “special tailoring”, according to Cunningham.

The spreadsheet contained a list of the names and sizes of a total of 91 officers, including the 13.

Because protective vests must be replaced every few years due to wear, having the correct size information is vital, Cunningham said.

210 of IMPD’s 1,640 officers are women. All officers are issued protective vests.
