Police ShootingA team of state, federal, and local officers were serving an arrest warrant for a felony probation violation at a home at 1812 N 8th Street when gunfire erupted from inside.

“They were serving the arrest warrant when suddenly shots rang out against the officers from who we believe was the suspect they were looking for,” said ISP Sgt. Joe Watts.

Terre Haute police officer Brent Long, 34, and Shadow, his K-9 partner, were shot within seconds of the officers entering the home Monday afternoon. Officer Long was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute where he later died. Shadow was taken to a local veterinarian where he is recovering.

Police said the suspect, a man in his 30s, was shot and killed inside the house. Police have not identified the suspect.

Long, a six-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department, is survived by his wife, their 11-year-old daughter, and 10-month-old son.
