Michael PhelpsThe bench trial for Michael Phelps, the teenager accused in the March 25th school shooting at Martinsville’s West Middle School, begins this morning in Morgan County Superior Court I.

Phelps, who had previously requested a “fast and speedy” jury trial, dropped that request last week and opted instead for a bench trial — a potentially risky legal move — in front of Judge G. Thomas Gray.

Phelps was charged March 28th with five felony counts (an additional felony charge was added later) and faces more than 80 years in prison if convicted on all charges. He was waived into adult court in late April.

The trial may be finished by the end of this week.
