Jessica Carder and Andrew RichardsLast year, two days before Christmas, a 22-year-old woman and her boyfriend were arrested on multiple felony charges relating to the abuse of the woman’s two-year-old son.

Jessica Carder, 22, and Andrew Richards, 27, were arrested after Richards allegedly pulled two of the child’s teeth out with a pair of pliers. Richards “was probably on at least six or eight Oxycontin pills that night,” says the arrest report.

Jefferson County Prosecutors say that an investigation started in November 2010 after the boy’s grandfather took him to the hospital. He was missing two teeth, had visible trauma to his gums, blood clots, and his lips were swollen. Bruising to the boy’s face and thigh was also found.

The two apparently told police different stories about how the boy lost his teeth. The “mother” claimed that the two-year-old pulled his teeth out on his own, although a medical examiner later said it would be impossible for a toddler to endure the pain of pulling his own teeth, in addition to being able to muster the strength.

The bruising on the child’s face was determined to likely be the result of the boy being restrained while his teeth were pulled out with pliers.

A search warrant was executed on the trailer the couple lived in. One of the boy’s teeth was found with the root and crown still intact.

In light of the evidence, Richards, the mother’s boyfriend, said that the boy had been complaining that his teeth hurt — not all that unusual for a two-year-old. According to investigators, Richards then admitted that he pulled the child’s teeth out.

Richards was charged with criminal confinement of a child and battery to a child, both felonies.

The mother was arrested and charged with two felonies: battery to a child that resulted in serious bodily injury and neglect of a dependent.

As part of a plea deal in which she will testify against Richards, Jessica Carder admitted to the charge of child neglect and was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Richards’ trial is scheduled for September.
