A 19-year-old soldier from Spencer, Private Brett Wood, was killed by a roadside bomb Friday while on patrol in Afghanistan.

According to military reports, Private Wood and others in his unit stepped on a hidden improvised explosive device (IED).

He had just returned to Afghanistan after being home for two and a half weeks for recovery after another person in his unit stepped on an IED. He suffered a concussion and hearing loss in that incident, while a fellow soldier lost both legs.

Private Wood’s body is to be returned to the United States today. His brother, Nikk Wood — who joined the military at the same time at Brett — will accompany his body home.
