Experts say that on Halloween night, children, compared to any other night of the year, are four times as likely to be hit by a car. Doctors recommend that children stay together in groups and that they always have a flashlight and adult chaperone with them. In addition, children are encouraged to stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets whenever possible.
Some communities, such as Bloomington, require convicted sex offenders to meet at a centralized location during trick or treating hours, but Lawrence County does not do this.
Tammy Milligan, who is running for the Mitchell City Council at-large seat, recently spoke with Officer Mark Jones of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. According to Milligan, Jones said that the probation department attempts to schedule meetings with sex offenders during trick or treat hours. If the offenders are not on probation, however, nothing can be done to prevent them from participating.
This coming week, Mitchell News will be bringing you a list of locations that you just might want to avoid while trick or treating.
