When police went to the IU Health Hospital this morning around 1:14 a.m., they smelled a strong odor of ether, said Lawrence County Police Chief Deputy Mike Branham.

A Mitchell man, John Cleek, was being treated at the hospital for chemical burns to his arms, face, chest, and legs. He was later flown by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital.

The man had told doctors that he got burnt when he was burning leaves.

Police weren’t convinced. They got a search warrant and went to a home 440 East Frank Street in Mitchell. There, police say, they found evidence of a meth lab and a fire. The Indiana State Police Clandestine Team was called in to clean up the site.

The case remains under investigation.
