A Mitchell man has been arrested and charged with armed robbery following an early morning hold-up.

Police say that just before 8 a.m. today, a man entered 60’s Eastside gas station at 282 Indiana 60 East and made off with money and cigarettes.

Jerold Leatherman, 33, was booked into the Lawrence County Jail this afternoon.

Comments posted to Facebook by people who were at the gas station when the robbery took place indicated that the man, who was wearing a hoodie during the robbery, made off with a carton of cigarettes. He reportedly fled the scene in a blue truck with flames on the side. They also reported that Leatherman was a “regular” at the gas station.

One woman who was at the gas station when the robbery happened said, “It took the cops what 10-15 minutes to get there?” Another comment criticized the slow arrival of the Mitchell Police, stating, “You know your cops are slow when county makes it there within 3 minutes AFTER the city.”

It is not clear what took the police so long to arrive.
